As you are probably aware, the fear of spiders is called arachnophobia, and it is a very common ailment. So why would someone want Autoshippers to send one of the eight-legged fiends from the UK all the way to Florida? Surely they’ve got better things to do?
Ah, but this is the type of spider that even the biggest arachnophobe wouldn’t mind coming across in their garage…
Alfa Romeo Spider
Once again, as with the recent shipment of a Hillman Tiger, we aren’t shipping a spider in creature form. When Kevin, who had shipped two vehicles previously through Autoshippers, contacted us again to ship a third vehicle to the USA, he knew he was coming to the right place. He’d found a 1996 Alfa Romeo Spider T Spark and needed his new purchase to join him in Florida.
Piece of cake!
Alfa Romeo Automobiles
Around 112 years ago, in June 1910, Alfa Romeo Automobiles S.p.A was first founded in Lombardy, Italy as A.L.F.A. The name “Alfa” is an acronym of its founding name, which was “Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automobili”. In English this is translated to “Anonymous Lombardy Automobile Factory”, the Anonymous part coming from the legal name of a company that had anonymous investors.
The first vehicles were the 12 HP and 24 HP, both being named for the respective horsepower rating of the engines. These were quickly followed up with the more powerful 40-60 HP models, along with the company’s first forays into motor racing with the 15 HP Corsa, 40-60 HP Corsa and in 1914 the Grand Prix.
1915 saw a break in automobile manufacture whilst the company produced military hardware. Between the two world wars the company, now known as Alfa Romeo, continued to produce luxury motor vehicles as well as racing cars, becoming a manufacturer of bespoke vehicles to wealthy Italians.
The second world war saw the Alfa factory bombed by the Allies, as it was coverted to the production of military vehicles and hardware. This meant that post-war the company struggled financially. What this meant was that the production of luxury, high-end vehicles was replaced by smaller, more affordable cars.
Alfa Romeo and Motorsport
Throughout its history, Alfa Romeo has always been associated with motorsports. From the beginning of the company’s existence, starting in 1911 with two 24HP models being raced in a road race in Sicily. Alfa Romeo soon began producing cars for Grand Prix racing, and in 1925 they were the first winners of the Automobile World Championship.
When The Formula One World Championship was first introduced in 1950, Alfa Romeo was immediately a prominent name, although the team withdrew after 2 years. After many years of other F1 teams using Alfa Romeo engines, they developed their own car again in 1979, withdrawing again in 1985.
2019 saw the reintroduction of Alfa Romeo into the world of F1 after Sauber announced that they would be renamed as Alfa Romeo Racing, and they continue to compete under this moniker.
Alfa Romeo Spider
It was 1966 when the Alfa Romeo Spider Series 1 was launched. A competition was held to choose a name for the model, and the eventual winner was the name “Duetto”, but this could not be used due to trademark issues. The model was finally given the name Spider, and it boasted a 1,570cc twin cam engine with dual side-draft carburettors with the potential of 0 – 60 in 11 seconds and a top speed of 115mph.
The original run of the Alfa Romeo Spider Series 1 through 4, was between 1966 and 1994, and it was in 1996 that the Alfa Romeo Spider 916 was introduced. The Spider 916 is a two-seater roadster sports car, and when it was first introduced it won many awards. Production ended in 2004, with sales continuing until the following year, and was replaced by the Alfa Romeo 939.
Shipping an Alfa Romeo Ro-Ro to The USA
When our customer, Kevin, bought his Alfa Romeo Spider 916 he made contact with Autoshippers to help him move it to The USA, as he had shipped with us before. He once again decided on our Ro-Ro service, which is a specialist vehicle shipping service utilising shipping vessels that are specially designed to carry vehicles. They are “rolled on and rolled off” which is where the name Ro-Ro derives from.
We’ve been shipping vehicles for 25 years, and there are a few options aside from the Ro-Ro service. You are able to ship sea freight using a dedicated container or shared container service, or for high-value vehicles you may prefer our airfreight service.
Shipping the wrong vehicle to the USA could work out costly for you though, so check out our US destination guide and our blog on Everything You Need To Know About The 25 Year Rule.
Kevin was very pleased with the service he received from Autoshippers and says;
“This is my 3rd car I’ve used Autoshippers to import to the USA. I cannot recommend them highly enough and I am just a happy customer….thanks again guys”
